Kyle Reed September 2, 2006 Response Paper #2 Question 1: The word life is one of the most broadly defined words in the English language. The online dictionary at http://dictionary.reference.com/search? defines life as the condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic objects and dead organisms, being manifested by growth through metabolism, reproduction, and the power of adaptation to environment through changes originating internally. Yet on another internet dictionary, life is defined in a more spiritual sense. The online dictionary at http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/Life defines life as the period from birth to death and a specific phase of earthly existence. Question 2: The six features or characteristics common to all living things are as follows: Order, Sensitivity, Growth, development, and reproduction, regulation, homeostasis, and metabolism. The first five characteristics can be found on page three of the packet in the section entitled “Properties of Life.” The last characteristic can be found on the website
