Results and Discussion The purpose of this experiment was to synthesize one of the two unknown cobalt complexes and measure the wavelengths of maximum absorbance. In first week of the experiment, Complex A was synthesized with 5.063g of Complex A cobalt salt in 7 mL of water. Then the mixture of 16g of NH4Cl with 16mL of NH4OH was added to the solution, which produced reddish orange color. While stirring the solution, 4 mL of 30% H2O2 was added with several small portion. Due to the reaction, the color of the solution changed to red. The mixture was then heated on a steam bath about 30 minutes and after the cool down, 65mL of 3M HCl was added. After heating the mixture to between 55°C to 60°C solution was filtered through a Buchner funnel and washed with 5mL of ice-cold water and 5mL of ice-cold acetone. During the second week, 200 mL of 2M NH 4 OH was added to the first week’s product of complex A and heated to 55°C. Then 65mL of 12.0 M HCl was then added to the solution with vigorous stirring.
