CJ 292 EXAM 2 REVIEW CHAPTER 5 WHAT ARE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES AMONG THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESEARCH DESIGNS? -Three types of research designs are a.) Experiments (true experiment) b.) Quasi- Experiments c.) Non- Experiments (cross-sectional and longitudinal) 1.) True Experiments- a.) Provides the most powerful design for testing causal hypothesis about the effect of a treatment or some other variable whose values can be manipulated by the researchers. b.) Allows us to establish three criteria for causality with a great deal confidence. c.) Must have two (2) comparison groups. One receiving the experimental condition (treatment or intervention) and the other receiving no treatment/intervention or another form thereof. Secondly, random assignment to the two (or more) comparison groups (counterfactual). Lastly, assessment of change in the dependant variable for both groups after the experimental condition has been received. d.) Cause proceeds effect e.) Empirical correlation exists by comparing the pretest to the second group. f.) True experiments possess a high degree of validity. g.) No spurious third variable influencing correlation between experimental and control groups due to randomization. 2.) Quasi- Experiments- a.) Maximize internal validity. b.) No random assignment. (exp. and comp. Groups are designated before the treatment occurs and are not created by random assignment.) non- equivalent control group designs. c.) Before and after designs. (pretest/posttest, but no comparison groups) d.) Ex post facto control group designs. groups in ex post facto designs are designated after the treatment or intervention has occurred. e.) “To a certain degree”
