Cold War review sheet---key people, terms, places Warsaw vs. NATO - Warsaw USSR’s alliances and 7 satellites in East Europe. Linked b/c Europe was divided in East/West o East Soviet dominated countries of East Europe. Communists but dictatorship in practice o West was democracy - NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) members pledged to help each other if attacked o Consisted of US, France, GB, Belgium, and other Allied countries Marshall Plan - George Marshall invented o Secretary of state in the late 1940’s presents an idea tremendous amount of economic aid to rebuild Europe help them and us - Eastern Europe says no thanks (except Yugoslavia which was relatively free of USSR control) - 2 groups form: NATO and Warsaw - THE IRON CURTAIN o It was a physical and ideological barrier between the US and USSR. This barrier prevents passage of info and ideas between the political entities. o Unable to know what is going on in Communist countries Ex. Space, economy, and military Where did communism first threaten Europe? - The satellite countries dominated by USSR Containment - the US strategy of keeping communism within its existing boundaries and preventing its further expansion o ex. Vietnam war Us tried to stop it from spreading, Bay of Pigs US doesn’t want communism in Cuba Domino Theory - the view that a communist victory in South Vietnam would cause noncommunist government across Southeast Asia to fall to communism, like a row of dominos o Vietnam War Cambodia Laos Nepal India Pakistan etc… Iron Curtain - It was a physical and ideological barrier between the US and USSR. They didn’t know about this: Space, economy, and military Berlin Blockade/Airlift - Yalta Conference (post war conference (big three) US, USSR, and GB initiate it) o Surrender of Germany o France gets sector of Germany o Nazi justice o USSR became part of UN o Wanted free elections in Eastern Europe gets ignored by USSR - What Yalta did to Germany o Demilitarized o Democratic o Nazi repealed o Branches had no power o No nationalism o Deportations of Germans in different countries - Divided Germany into four parts and divided Berlin (in the soviet territory) in to 4 parts - Main purpose o Soviet blocked Berlin from getting supplies and so the west allies made west Berlin and provided them food and supplies, going on for 324 days, uninterrupted. o Airlift stopped September 1, 1949, continued on from May because they were afraid that when they left, soviets would start the blockade again. o Blockade stopped May 12, 1949 Korean War and its aftermath (Korea today) - Dates: June 25, 1950 to July 27, 1953 - Post WW2: Was a unified nation until Japan invaded; US controlled South Korea, while USSR controlled communist NK. Japan surrendered SK to US.
