Megan Timm Extra Credit Chapter 1: 1. The primary source of energy supplied to our planet is provided by the sun’s energy. It is approximately 93 million miles. The earth only intercepts a very small fraction of the sun’s total energy output. The radiant energy, energy that is transferred in the form of waves that have electrical and magnetic properties is what drives the atmosphere into the patterns of everyday wind and weather, and allows for life to flourish. 3. Water vapor varies greatly from place to place. In warm, tropical locations, water vapor may account for up to 4 percent of the atmospheric gases. In cold, arctic areas, its concentration may dwindle to a mere fraction a percent. They only become visible when they transform into larger liquid or solid particles, such as cloud droplets and ice crystals. It is the only substance that exists as a gas, liquid, and a solid. Condensation is when water vapor changes into liquid water. Evaporation is when liquid water becomes water vapor. Chapter 2: 2. The average speed of the atoms and molecules is known as temperature. The atoms and molecules do not move at the same speed, the energy that is associated with motion is called Kinetic energy. Higher temperatures correspond to faster average speeds. By warming of the air, molecules move faster, but they also move slightly farther apart and the air becomes less dense. By cooling the air, molecules slow down, crowd closer together, and the air would become denser. At a temperature of -273 degrees C (-459
