Gregorian Chant are melodies that refer to the church services, that were codified by Pope Gregory the Great. There are more than three thousand Gregorian melodies, and they form an immense body of music, however. nearly all of them are anonymous. The chant avoids wide leaps, allowing its gentle contours to create a kind of musical speech. They fall into three main classes, Syllabic, Neumatic, and Melismatic. Modes are variety of scale patterns that were used from Gregorian chant through music of the Renaissance and were typically Western music. Syllabic is a type of class that pertains to chant melodies. It is when one note is sung to each syllable in a text.
