Food has not only been used to feed those who are hungry, but to also depicts the culture. As seen in many parts of the world, food cannot only feed the hungry, but it represents the economy of that particular area. Besides economic standing, it is used to bring people together everyday. Whether it is a celebration, or simply a gift to a friend, food plays a social role that simply brings people together. Christ Stopped at Eboli, written by Carlo Levi, illustrates the folklore and beliefs of the people of Gagliano. Because education is so low in this area, the people believe in traditions to explain many things. These traditions have been passed down for many years and people rely on them in their everyday lives. Food is a large part of these traditions. Foodways are crucial in identifying the types of people in Gagliano through their everyday traditions and customs. Social status is seen clear through the difference between the rich and poor. There is a large difference between their cultures. The rich eat lavishly and have no worry when it comes to having food.
