Nicholas Buttler LU 1103-29 Lipscomb Seminar: Houston, We Have a Problem Dr. Gwinn Death of the Soyuz 11 Astronauts Three Soviet astronauts were found dead in the Soyuz 11 space ship on June 29, 1971. Because no one noticed that there was a small oxygen leak in the ship, it cost three lives. Tass, the Soviet press agency, reported that “All functions were operating normally as the Soyuz capsule made its re-entry into the earths [sic] atmosphere this morning after a flight that lasted 24 days” (qtd. in Gwertzman 1:8). The Soyuz 11 space ship had docked with the Salyut space station and broken the record for human endurance in space. The previous record was 17 days, 16 hours, and 58 minutes, set by Soyuz 9. The reason for the mission, according to Colonel Dobrovolsky, the lieutenant and mission commander of the three-astronaut crew, was “for work on the ferry craft, for docking with the Salyut and for engineering, astrophysical and medical experiments” (qtd. in Gwertzman 8:1).

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
