IDENTITY VS. IDENTITY CONFUSION2Identity vs. Identity ConfusionTalia is a 17-year-old high school senior who appears to be having a crisis when it comes to her future plans, learning more about her cultural identity because she is Caucasian/Asian, andis struggling with self-esteem issues due to struggling developmentally over the past year. As a human service worker it is my job to analyze the case study pertaining to Talia. With the information that I gather from analyzing the case I will implement Erikson’s stage of Identity versus Identity Confusion to assess Talia’s current struggles with her future plans, examine the influence of culture on cultural identity pertaining to her situation, and suggest some viable interventions that may assist her to improve her self-esteem. Talia’s case seems to be a typical case that is consistent with Erikson’s psychosocial stageof development called Identity versus Identity Confusion. This particular stage involves adolescents exploring options that lead them on a quest to understand who they are. This involvess adolescents taking on different roles to see if they fit into any of the capabilities and views that they have for themselves (Feldman, 2014). To begin to understand who they are adolescents will usually begin to narrow their political, occupational, personal, and sexual commitments (Feldman, 2014); however, there are some adolescents who struggle with their efforts to discover their identity, so they may be thrown off course in their quest. When this happens an adolescent may engage in roles that express what they do not want to be, or will havedifficulty in forming and maintaining long-lasting relationships with others.
