Aspect of the Plantation System: high mortality means constant influx of slaves First time that sugar is cultivated entirely by slaves and these slaves are mostly African Plantation system Cash crops: sugar (later tobacco, cotton) Profits go to a new world aristocracy: the Planters High labor demand = constant influx of slaves Slaves = predominantly males w/ low life expectancy The ‘triangle of trade’ (a very simplified idea) was actually a global economy Plantation system in America: what’s different? Smaller numbers: 500,000 imported to America (12-13 million in Caribbean)
