Unformatted text preview: Page 1 of 8 Trisha Godio Cheryl Schnitzer Due: October 15, 2007 Alternate Energy Sources In the recent years, the principle fight of the times has been directed towards our planet, with concern over its wellbeing over the next few years. The subject of environmental protection includes many different fields regarding the conservation of energy. Everything around requires energy. As humans we require energy as well, which we get from food, sugar. Automobiles require energy which they get from the fuel put into the car. It even took energy to extract that energy from its' source. It is a chain of energy consumption. Eighty percent of our energy comes from fossil fuels and waste predicts which also presents undesirable effects of pollution (Baird). That puts the earth in danger as well as keeps it running as a civilization. Because of this undesirable side effect there are people, including myself, who feel it is a responsibility to protect where you live, just as one would protect their home (Earth is our home, too), and work towards finding a way to use energy without harming the environment. When talking about alternate sources of energy, Page 2 of 8 we are referring to renewable and sustainable energy sources. In other words, sources of energy that can naturally replenish themselves and which are not expected to be depleted in a timeframe relevant to the human race (Baird). Renewable energy's most important characteristic is its efficiency without emitting greenhouse gases, along with processes to capture it. The "solar revolution" we've heard about the past couple of years stem from the idea that on day we will all use free electricity from the sun. The electricity drawn from solar energy is generated by the photo conversion mechanism of absorption by the use of photovoltaic (photo meaning light, and voltaic meaning electricity; in other words, converting sunlight directly into electricity) cells or solar cells. A semi-conductor is used to line the panel which has a conducting behavior between a free conductor and a non-conductor. Silicone is the primary material for solar panels which absorb much of the photons of light coming from the sun.
