ANT 307 Class Notes 1 April 2008 Marriage: Gender Roles, Patriarchy and Agency Feminism and race: White women less ideal as they resist gender role of subordinate to husbands Black women less ideal because of stereotypes, too sexual, asexual or not feminine enough Asian women a good substitution for ruined white women, stereotype of sexually modest and  appealing – must be wary of dragon ladies and geishas who wish to take advantage Patriarchy: women with limited avenues to economic independence, dependent upon males in life,  prince charming idea Agency: women who choose to seek male partners outside of homeland and who exercise power in  choosing prospective mate and negotiating how the relationship evolved. Questions:  Is the act of embracing traditional gender roles necessarily one of embracing patriarchy and  oppression? In what ways do we see the influence of feminism in the lives of these women?
