Wednesday October 31, 2007 Aeschylus- the playwright who wrote the Agamemnon and 2 others plays. All three together are the Orestaia. Signal flames in Mycenae. A messenger sent from the Greeks tells them that Agamemnon has returned. Agamemnon returns, he has been gone for 10 years. -- His wife, Clytemnestra, has taken another lover, Aegisthus. -- Agamemnon brings back Cassandra and tells wife to take care of her. Clytemnestra makes fun of Cassandra because she does not speak greek. The Chorus is left talking to Cassandra. Cassandra has curse and prophesizes that Clytemnestra will kill Agamemnon and Cassandra but the chorus does not believe her. -- They hear a cry from Agamemnon and Clyemnestra kills both Cassandra and Agamemnon. The Chorus is always important in ancient Greek drama. Is composed of all men of Mycenae that were too old for the Trojan War. -- Before the war, Agamemnon has sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia and they blame him for that. -- They are also bitter of how the war has occurred.
