Annie O’Brien ANT 307 Class Notes 3/25/08 Romance on a Global Stage -Gender stereotypes -Gender roles -Agency Essentialism – Stereotypes of Race and Gender -The assumption that groups, categories or classes of people have one or several defining  features exclusive to all members of the group. -Some assume the presence of essential characteristics distinguishing one race from another or  the feminine from the masculine.  Gender Essentialism The male stereotype: Strong, masculine, provider, stoic, sexually aggressive, the initiator,  promiscuous. The female stereotype: Passive, emotional, feminine, caring, lady-like, weak, sexually repressed,  nurturing, dainty, sneaky, aggressive.  Where they come from: society, cultural roles Racial Essentialism Taxonomies and hierarchies created by European scientists upon discovering new cultures: -Europeaeus: intelligent, gentle, acute, governed by law
