Monday October 22 nd , 2007 Nostoi is a lost epic. Told the story of the Trojan war in epic verse. The Odyssey is based on the journey of the Trojan war through Odysseus, a greek hero. Menelaus’ brother, Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks at Troy, is killed by his wife Clymnestra and her lover Aegisthus. Menelaus and Helen have a daughter, Hermione. Odysseus’ son Telemachus tries to assert control of the household while Odysseus is gone. Odysseus and Telemachus go see Odysseus’ old father, Laertes. The first four books focus mainly on Telemachus, and are called Telemachy. Odysseus spends seven years in the captivity of Calypso in her home,

Unformatted text preview: Ogygia. • Nausicaa welcomes Odysseus when he washes up in the home of the Phaeacians, Scherie. She tells him to seek the help of her parents Arete and Alcinous. He is immediately welcomed. • Odussomai means “hate”. • Odysseus drunks Polyphemus the Cyclops and stabs him in the eye. He is able to escape but commits hubris in doing so by boasting about it. • Circe advises Odysseus and his men about the rest of their journey. Odysseus put wax in the ears of his men when passing by the Sirens, they passed the many-headed Scylla and the whirlpool Charybdis....
