Purpose The purpose of this experiment was to test the mass percent of sodium bicarbonate in an alka-seltzer tablet. The reason for doing this is because often the active ingredients in medicines are not in great amounts since other medications are added for side effects. In this lab, using stoichiometry and balanced chemical reactions we can also find out moles and how much product from given reactants are produced. Procedures The procedures stayed the same for this experiment and were derived from: FSU Chemistry and Biochemistry. Total mass before= 1.6535g + (84.8901-50.9842)= 35.5594g *Total Mass After = (Mass of beaker and solution-Mass of Beaker) + (Mass of watch glass after – Mass of Watch glass before) Ex. Total mass after= (86.1992-50.9842) + (10.0098-9.9701) = 35.2547g
