GOV 210 Class Notes March 5 th  2008  What takes down the Boss machine system? -registration -Senate -primaries -civil service -referendum initiative, recall -Australian ballot Voter turnout – 1896 (McKinley and Bryan) Lower dips when Southern states aren’t participating Late 19 th  century – turnout rates between 75-80% In 1900, voters lose incentive to vote (breakdown of Boss machine systems).  Blacks are also disenfranchised. Women receiving the right to vote does not have  huge effect (not many women voting because the women most likely to vote were  the wealthy)  Economic problems being addressed are national economic problems, interest in  regulating the large corporations.  National government should be involved in the regulation so that they are
