Wednesday September 5, 2007 Theogony by Hesiod The Nine Muses -- “We know to sing reality” -- Indication that people are thinking of poetry. When the muses speak to Hesiod, they insult him and remind him of his nature and immortality. Hesiod is concerned with why things are the way they are. Entities --Earth Goddess Gaia – A feminine force and one of the first entities from Chaos. She bears Ouranos(the sky god) and becomes his lover. -- Titans: -- Kronos- born through Gaia and Ouranos. -- Rhea and Kronos give birth to Zeus. -- Gaia and Ouranos - * Produce Titans * Produce Cyclops – Warlike monsters that have a large central eye. * Produce 3 Hecatoncheires – They have 100 arms and 50 heads. Ouranos is outraged by their appearance and hides them in Earth herself and angers her. She calls upon the Titans and Kronos

Rhea does not let the 6 th child be eaten. Gives birth on Crete and gives Kronos a stone instead of the baby. Zeus grows up on Crete and has vengeance against his father. He goes to the Cyclops and Hecatoncheires to get help. Kronos vomits up the rest of his children and Zeus takes over Kronos. *The children are Zeus, Hera, Hades, Hestia, Poseidon and Demeter.-- The 12 Olympians...
