Michael Slagh 29SEP03 Section 7 “Immigration and how it affects America” The Archetype I chose to describe the illegal immigration situation in America  was “Shifting the Burden”. This structure is composed of two balancing loops and a  reinforcing loop. The problems usually arise when people do not avoid the symptomatic  solution. The desired results are achieved from this method—but only temporarily—and  there are unexpected side effects that can make the situation worse and even ‘snowball.’  In this example, a problem symptom—or the high rates of immigration—is perceived.  The symptomatic solution—or something such as stricter border controls or funding  Spanish-language projects—usually seems good at the moment, or will have an apparent  advantage (i.e. time frame) over the fundamental solution. But, when the fundamental  solution is not implemented, the problem is sure to return; this is why we should avoid  the symptomatic solution. These inadequate solutions also have costly and unexpected  side effects, in this case financial burdens, as well as political and social divisions on our
