Elissa Patterson ARH 303/FINAL PAPER/FALL 2003 December 5, 2003 The Readymade and the Artist: Duchamp and his Revolution Marcel Duchamp’s theory that art should be more intellectual, than physical, has had long-reaching effect in the world of 20 th century art, especially in the work of Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, and Jeff Koons. Permeating all of Duchamp's works is a sense of satirical humor. Many of his works, such as Fountain, may seem to fit into his more solemn ideas, but in fact have humor at their center. Duchamp hated the pretentiousness and discriminatory traits of the art world as well as the sterility of the existing art movements and wanted to add humor and emotion into them as well as highlight their ridiculousness. The new artist that Duchamp’s ideals describe is the one who can see any entity aesthetically. The difference between artist and non-artist is that the artist beholds the artistic facet within any object while the non-artist sees objectively. Unlike Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns did not give up painting while composing
