POLI 142K: Politics and Warfare 20:53 Poli 142K – Politics and Warfare Warfare is coordinated forms of assault and violence In this course its not a moral issue, but a fact to be explained Warfare does not simply happen, it requires institutions to fight it, causes to fight  about, and both of those entail that a choice be made to go to war or stay at  peace. This course talks about conscious decisions made by two societies that ultimately  end up in coordinated inter-societal violence.  It is coordinated, because it  requires a choice to fight and institutions to fight the war. People who fight in combat are still rational human beings, not good guys or bad  guys Warfare is always costly, therefore it never occurs without a discussion, without a  process of choice that leads up to war rather than peace. War can however also occur because of accidental causes, or bad information, or  the inability to achieve a bargain which would result in peace. We are looking as war in this course from the standpoint of political science, as a  coordinated inter-societal form of violence. Can Warfare ever be not just a choice (a decision), but a rational choice? Some people argue no, that if people have enough information (are well  informed) or had better resources, they would always find a solution which  involved bargaining and peace, rather than resulting in warfare.

He wants to try to show us in this course, that in some circumstances of the  ballence of power internationally, warfare can be not just a choice made after  deliberation, etc. And not just a choice made by the individuals who fight it, but a  choice which can be rational, the benefits from going to war exceed the costs, the  benefits of going to war exceed the benefits of peace. The American Revolution was an international war as well as a revolution, lasted  form 1775 until Peace was made in 1783. From 1775 to 1781 the Revolutionary  war was a devastating war in terms of economic resources, lives, etc.   When faced with a choice like this, the choice to resort to warfare, rather than  continuing to bargain with the British Crown, we can ask if this was a rational  choice. Or was it irrational, ignorant to the costs which would come of it. What would constitute a rational war choice? -Measures of probably success (for the choice of warfare to be rational, there  have to be certain objective indicators of probable outcomes of success, so that it  can be shown that the benefits of war are greater than the benefits of peace) With regards to the American Revolution there are three of these:
