Culture and Spirituality Notes Religion Formalized ritual dogma and belief Spirituality Sacred cosmos transcends physical surroundings Find the sacred in natural surroundings Divination (and Healing) Saw in Zulu Zion Diviner like a family psychologist Based on a fixed body of knowledge o Utilizes set routine and devices (both religious and rational) o Rational because diviner knows what’s going on and he has set of knowledge that he has seen over the years, so he has experience and knows what signs to look for---not simply looking to the heavens—works on his experience and experience of his family (transferred father to son or mother to daughter usually) o Provides diagnosis and plan of action by Diviner and the family o Diviner—person like a doctor—finds a cure—uses various devices to figure out what’s wrong o Not just individual that has the problem—group has to be cured as well o
