4/08/08 - Modernism 08/04/2008 16:00:00 Film: Passage To India Modernism Has a long history in art, spanning from the beginning of the last century Key 20 th /21 st  century movement How do you go from something as classical as Back Street to something a  different as Passage To India Modernism entered the cinema in the 10s/20s/30s to produce experimental  cinema in France, Germany Russian constructivists began to use cinema in an entirely different way Didn’t last very long (Modernist’s impact on cinema) o Ended because of 2 reasons Audience didn’t like it Didn’t like Soviet Constructive Realism Very Subversive Then WWII happened, post-war situation o Europe took Modernism to its heart o European cinema began to reconfigure itself o A renaissance in cinema occurred o Sweden, chamber dramas o French, by end of 1950s, French New Wave constructive films o England, Free Cinema o Middle Europe, new consciousness amongst filmmakers like Polanski o Finally makes its way to the US Modernism Content
