Writing Systems 12/02/2008 14:05:00 Topic for the week Writing and Reading History of writing  Precursors: o Tokens and tallies o By 9000 BC or earlier o Seal, India, 2300-1750 BC Earliest true writing o Sumerian (Modern Iraq): 3500BC o Egyptian: 3000 BC o China: 1500 BC o Mayan (Yucatan): 300AD Origin of the Alphabet o North Semitic (Phoenician, early Hebrew): Palestine and Syria, 1700BC Types of Writing systems o Base on question: What does each symbol stand for? o Example: Logographic writing = one symbol for each morpheme o Example: Alphabetic writing = one symbol for each speech sound Pictographic writing: o Earliest type of writing o Each symbol stands for some object -- it is literally a picture of that  object Ideographic writing o Next stage after pictographic o Symbols so stylized that they no longer resemble original object
