Division / Classification What is a division / classification essay? A division / classification essay breaks down a subject into its constituent types. The main purpose of a division / classification essay is to develop an understanding of the whole in terms of the parts. For example, in order to effectively understand the military of the US (the whole), one must first develop an understanding of the Navy, the Marines, the Army, the Air Force, and the Coast Guard (the parts). Though division and classification are actually two separate processes, the pattern of development is very similar. Division refers to separating something (one thing) into its component parts, with no emphasis placed on ranking. Oftentimes, classifying constitutes a ranking of the categories. For example, if someone is analyzing Types of Burns, he or she would classify them as first degree, second degree, and third degree. Classification refers to grouping a number of things (more than one thing) into categories.
