Definition: What definition does: For language to communicate, words must have accepted definitions. “Definition,” therefore, means spelling out exactly what a word or phrase means. The problem with abstract concepts: Take, for example, the term “love,” and abstract concept. One of the major obstacles in defining this term is that we cannot point to a thing or an object that clearly defines love. We can only define love with words, which rely solely on our experience of love. The problem is that people do not lead such identical existences – especially cross-culturally – that they can agree on a common meaning. When to use definition: Definition is primarily used when discussing abstract ideas or concepts, as opposed to concrete ideas or concepts. For example, imagine you are telling a friend about a new piece of audio equipment – a concrete concept – you recently purchased. As a last resort in your explanation about this piece of equipment, you can “show” the piece of equipment to your friend, thus dismissing any misleading assumptions.
