Brandon Walker History 110 11/10/15 Amnesia: Race, Immigration, and Citizenship “Amnesia” is a play written and performed by Ariel Luckey, who is a poet, playwright, performer, and scholar. “Amnesia” tells the story of a young man who retraces his family’s migration from a small village in Eastern Europe through New York’s Lower East Side to Los Angeles, California, and eventually, Phoenix, Arizona. Unfortunately, all he discovers is that the violence his family fled from is essentially everywhere. Luckey used the expedition and the story of his great-great-grandfather’s immigration to America to create a theater piece about the inequalities encountered today all over the United States. The idea for this play began in 2010 when SB 1070 passed in Arizona, which allows enforcement officers to stop anyone who looked suspicious and ask for their immigration documents. Luckey conducted online research as well as interviewing his family members in order to learn more about where his family came from. He found out that his great-great-grandfather fled
