Applied Psychologist – extend the principles of scientific psychology to practical, everyday problems in the real world Research Psychologists - collect data on fundamental issues in psychology Is the mind separate from the body? - Debated in Psych - Descartes (1596-1650) – mind and body separate – body cannot think o Reflex – automatic involuntary reactions by body - Mind & Brain have similar properties - Today most Psychologists assume one in the same Nature – Born with predispositions - Nativism – certain knowledge and ideas are innate - Gestalt psych – humans born with certain fixed way to view world Nurture – trained people that way - Empiricism - knowledge comes directly from experience Natural Selection – Darwin – individuals better than others at surviving Nature + Nurture
