BUAD 304 12:00pm Monday Lab Jenny Xu Assignment #1 1. All stereotypes begin with some sort of truth. It starts with one bad experience which then gets engrained into the mind of whoever had the experience. In the case of the used- car salesmen stereotype, someone may have had a bad experience with a sleazy used-car salesman and from then on expected every car salesman to be the same. After that experience, the person may have gone to a different car salesman expecting him to be the same. With this preconceived notion, he or she selectively perceived the qualities of the salesman which matched with his or her previous impression. Pretty soon the stereotype developed from the individual level when people who had had similar experiences began talking. Once the “untrustworthy used-car salesman” got big enough, the media started to play a role. The media plays a significantly influential role in society, whether we like to think so or not.
