A Comical Commercial? Or Manipulative Masterpiece Everybody knows the benefits of having safe sex. Safe sex is defined as: “Sexual activity in which safeguards, such as the use of a condom and the avoidance of high-risk acts, are employed to reduce the chance of acquiring or spreading a sexually transmitted disease.”(American Heritage) Wearing a condom is the number one method of having safe sex. While wearing condoms is a great way to prevent unwanted pregnancy, the fact that they prevent sexually transmittable diseases is a far more important reason for using them. If this is the case, then shouldn’t condom companies focus on advertising that their product is a healthy devise to use in the practice of safe sex, rather than to prevent pregnancy? In 2006, the Zazoo condom company ran an advertisement depicting a young boy with his father in a grocery store. The child looked cute and innocent at first, but then, soon after being told he couldn’t have any candy, turned into a uncontrollable nightmare of a toddler. The father stood there trying to calm his child down as he flailed about on the floor kicking his leg and swinging his arms in a frenzy that could not be stopped. The child went on to pull products off of their shelves and throw them about, all the while letting out earsplitting screams that attracted the attention of everybody in the store. The camera then cut to a close up of the father who had given up on his attempts to tame the young miscreant. Just then a message appears across the bottom of the screen saying
