Marco Polo -- explorer (duh) who traveled in 1271 across Asia, Silk Route, Mongol Empire Ibn Battuta – visited the Islamic world, into Africa Aztecs – empire in the Americas, emerged in Central Mexico. Theocracy, human sacrifice, rulers exerted power over the people. Tenochtitlan founded 1325. Incas – largest empire in the Americas. Left side of the Americas Tenochtitlan – Aztec capitol Mansa Musa – ruler of Mali. Held great wealth, commited to Islam. Dar-al-Islam – The house of Islam, stretched from Spain to India and China. Included diversity but still had a sense of common Islamic identity.Became diverse through conquest and conversion. Muhammad – the prophet of the Muslim faith. Born and died in Mecca in the late 500s to early 600s. His revelations recorded in the Quran. Quran – Allah’s revelations. Koran. Book. Sharia – Law of Islam Hadith – sayings of the prophet Five Pillars – 1) believe there is no god but Allah. 2) Pray 5 times a day. 3) alms, support those less fortunate. 4) fast during Ramadan 5) pilgrimage to Mecca
