Katie Kerr PHL 304 July 17, 2006 Some Facts About Famine Kia Nielsen Justice requires an extensive redistribution of resources from ‘the North’  to ‘the South’ Global imbalance: - resources concentrated in the North -        misery concentrated in the South Against GH: 1.        wrong assumption: (p. 412 quote- while lifeboats… scientific effect were  set in that direction) 2.        Main problem is not overpopulation (or even drought) but man-made  problems. We are not making good use of valuable resources. “domestic food  production… cannot afford to pay (p.413). Problems are economic, social,  technological, or even political. Examples:         Africa: Severe famine although half of the unused farm land in the world         Latin America: Latifundia system         Cash crops Sen: - total availability of food of a country is one out of many variables. -        “many famines occur without any decline in the availability of food” p.
