4/3/08 HIST 4020/ Era of the Great War War Culture and its Consequences I. Review: What constituted 'war culture'? A. War fought in defense of culture. Sacrifices made in war are regrettable, but necessary. Reconciling the suffering. - The world will be a better place. i.e. German defense of Kultur.-->German victory can preserve. French defense of the republic/democracy---> if France wins, democracy can spread. America can help structure progressive principles if they participate in war. - “The War to End all Wars” =sacrificing this war to make further war impossible. Deep optimism and idealism. B. War culture permeates every level of society. - Propaganda: media and schools - Mobilization of the intellect. Getting the educated on the side of the war: rationalizing. - Most people accepted the arguments rationalizing the war: there was very little dissent in wartime culture during the war. II. How did 'war culture' manifest itself in everyday life?
