Lee Cessna Professor Schultz ANT 2511 5 November 2007 Leakey’s Angels By definition, primatology is the study of primates. I am sure that primatology is not the most talked about subject among people today, but there are a few primatologists who deserve recognition for everything that they accomplished. A few of the most influential primatologists would be Dian Fossey, Jane Goodall, and Birute Galdikas who were also known as Leakey’s Angels. This small group sparked many new ways of thinking, and have helped the world by educating the public wherever possible. Each person has a unique and exhilarating story about their life in the field. Dian Fossey was born on January 16, 1932, in San Francisco, California. Fossey studied as a preveterinary student in her undergraduate work, and spent seven years as director of occupational therapy in a Louisville, Kentucky hospital. Fossey became extremely interested in mountain gorillas after reading a book on the subject. In 1963, Fossey took her first trip to Africa where she met Dr. Louis Leakey and his wife Mary. While in Africa, Fossey got the chance to see the mountain gorillas up close and was fascinated by them. She then returned back to Kentucky where she was the director of the occupational- therapy department at the Kosair Crippled Children Hospital in Louisville. Three years later Louis Leakey visited her in Kentucky to try and urge her to follow through on her dream of
