Qur’an Review The basic outline and details of the life of Muhammad Muhammad (570-632) was an orphan cared for by his grandfather. He married and had seven children. He meditated on the mountain Hira near Mecca. The angel Gabriel commanded him to recite what is now known as surah 96 of the Qur’an. He preached belief “in single creating and judging God and warning against the last judgment.” He traveled and encountered many different people. He emphasized Abraham and his son, Ishmael. He prayed in the direction of Mecca. The five pillars of Islam Shahada: The Confession- There is no god but God and Muhammad is God’s Messenger. Salat: Ritual Prayer 5 times daily facing Mecca; basic unit is sequence of movements- Dawn, Midday, Late Afternoon, Sunset, Night. Zakat: Almsgiving. Ramadan: 9 th Month of Lunar Calendar. Abstain from food, drink, sexual relations from dawn to sunset. Hajj to Mecca:
