Fornecker 1 Benjamin Fornecker West: Enlightenment to Present Prof. Hamlin 10 April 2006 Transformations Caused by the First World War During the early 20 th century, the political and cultural life changed during and after the First World War. Economically, the war called for many alterations in land and power compared to the rest of the world. Japan and the United States threatened Europe after the war in terms of rising as their competitors financially. Politically speaking, Russia was run under communism, Italy under fascism, and democracy became stronger because the democratic states proved victorious in the First World War. World War I began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo. This led to Austria-Hungary demanding from Serbia that people be arrested, in which the Serbians turned to Russia for help. After Serbia refused to arrest their people or hand them over, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. This triggered a multitude of attacks between Austria-Hungary, Germany, Serbia, Russia, Britain, and France. As fighting continued for exactly five years, the Treaty of Versailles eventually caused things to settle down returning Alsace-Lorraine to France, giving reparations to the Germans, and placing blame on Germany as well as providing them with guilt for causing the war. 1 The end of the war had many economic consequences, including trading disruptions as well as many costs, both reparations and reconstruction. 2 A good thing 1 http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/FWWversailles.htm 2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aftermath_of_World_War_I
