Convinced Stalin they ^ would do anything to destroy Communism America turned inwards as did Russia Great Depression—American politics shifted to the left. FDR Square Deal; Stalin Collectivization—kept secret Socialism in one country Moscow Trials, Stalin’s Soviet Union revealed as a police state, not a worker’s paradise Thousands stayed loyal to the Communist dream. Hitler, Roosevelt wanted to stay out of European wars. Neville Chamberlain trusted Hitler would listen to reason. 1938 Chamberlain flew to Munich to appease Hitler. Licensed Hitler to seize the Czech land. Stalin took lessons from Hitler—Western democracies wouldn’t stand up to Hitler. Fascists and Communists about to embrace. Sept ’39 Hitler invaded Poland. GB and FRA declared war on GER/RUS 1940 Hitler struck west, FRA BEL HOL NOR DEN YUGO and GREECE. BRIT held out alone. 12-7-41 Pearl Harbor. Hitler declared war on US. US and RUS allies America aided RUS with guns and trucks. RUS wanted a 2 nd front. Stalingrad 6 months, GER trapped surrendered, tide of war turned.
