History: Dr. Sola-Corbacho Major Essay Due: November 28 th 2007 Nationalism After 1800 In Europe Thesis: Since 1800, uprisings in Europe in the name of nationalism were common and seemed to be continuously happening simultaneously and consecutively. Nationalism is a term that describes a group of people that are bound together by common characteristics such culture, language, heritage, history or ethnicity. Not always is a nation of people bound by a border or state. A nation can be a group of people that encompasses many countries. A modern example of this is the nation of Kurds who overlap many established countries. A nation that has its own borders is referred to as a nation state. This can be seen in many countries today such as France, Italy and Spain. Many nations desire their own country with borders that fasten them together into a nation state. Some nations want this so badly that they can be seen in history going to war over it. Many nations of people hold certain characteristics of nationalism to a higher degree than others such as ethnicity others less so with mere values of language and/or history. There are many nations within every state and even nation states. The United States and Canada are prime examples. In the south of the U.S. area such as Texas can be seen as an entire nation of

people that share a history, culture, language dialect, interests and heritage that is all their own yet it is happily apart of a bigger nation state, America. In Canada, the nation of Québec shares many distinctive characteristics but has been pushing for a succession from Canada as a nation state through Canadian legislation. Many nations in history have tried to create a nationalistic country through force and power. Territory is a very important aspect of nationalism that caused some of the biggest disputes in the 19th and 20th century. Since 1800, uprisings in Europe in the name of nationalism were common and seemed to be continuously happening simultaneously and or consecutively. By the 1800 Europe was already divided into many nations with well defined boundaries. But many nations of people in Europe struggled for a nation-state that they could call there own. The most important nationalistic revolutions after 1800 in Europe start with the Italian and German Unifications. World War One spawned many nationalistic disputes and revolutions. Russian, German and American expansionistic engagements of ww2 and the cold war are
