Activity 1 Directions: Identify the following tissue types and write itscharacteristics on the line below.1.Type of tissue:2.Type of tissue:
3.Type of tissue:NERVOUS TISSUECharacteristics:4.Type of tissue:EPITHELIAL TISSUECharacteristics:Nervous tissue makes up for the CNS andPNS of the nervous systemContains two distinct cells – neurons and glialcellsIt consists of the dendrites, cell body, axon andnerve endings.Neurons secrete chemical neurotransmitterswhich are responsible for stimulating otherneurons as a result of a stimuliPresence of specialization at axonal terminalscalled synapsisNerve cells live long, cannot be divided andreplaced (except memory cells)Epithelial tissue is composed of cells laid outin sheets with strong cell-to-cell attachments. These protein connections hold the cellstogether to form a tightly connected layer thatis avascular but innervated in nature. The epithelial cells are nourished bysubstances diffusing from blood vessels in theunderlying connective tissue. One side of theepithelial cell is oriented towards the surfaceof the tissue, body cavity, or externalenvironment and the other surface is joined toa basement membrane. The basement layer isnon-cellular in nature and helps to cement theepithelial tissue to the underlying structures.
