Ilya Miller Honors Statistics Article 1 Statistics in the courtroom For this assignment I read the article named statistics in the courtroom. I found this article a very entertaining and provocative read. The people involved in this article are a nurse by the name of Kristen Gilbert, a statistician named Dr. Gehlbach, and the hospital staff of the VA hospital in Massachusetts. The situation at hand deals with an accusation from some of the staff of the hospital that Kristen Gilbert, a former nurse at the hospital, may have been aiding in the deaths of several patients over the last 10 years. The reason why statistics plays such a huge role in this case is because there is no concrete evidence that proves the guilt of this nurse. The article shows several charts and diagrams that illustrate the significant increase in deaths occurring during the shifts at which Ms. Gilbert worked. For each given year, there is at least one shift during which 25 to 35 deaths occur annually. Most significant however, is that although all these shifts were not at the same time, the nurse
