Bowers 1 Greg Bowers Professor Aguirr Intro to Drama November 29, 2007 The failures that Big Daddy in Cat On a Hot Tin Roof and Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman share as fathers. Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman share very few differences with Tennessee William’s character Big Daddy in Cat On a Hot Tin Roof. Both men have the same basic goal in life, and that is to provide for their families, and make them happy. Both men come up short in achieving their goal as family men, but come about it in slightly different ways. Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman and Big Daddy in Tennessee William’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, are two characters that fail at their goal of being good fathers similarly because of their relationship with their own fathers, and differently because of their careers. To understand both Willy and Big Daddy’s shortcomings as fathers, one has to look back at the characters relationships with their fathers. Willy was very fond of his father who left their family when he was young. Growing up without a father put Willy at a huge disadvantage to raising sons. Without the influence of a male figure, and the experience of being raised by a father, Willy had no reference when it came to raising his sons. He simply would teach his sons ideas and values that he just assumed a good father would do, probably the things that he wished his father would have told him. A good 1
