Study  Questions ESSAY QUESTION (50 points) During the Polk administration, the United States expanded to the west coast. How did the U.S. acquire land between 1845 and 1848? Describe the Mexican-American War in some detail. Why did the conflict start? What were the major military turning points? How did the war end? Thoreau wrote, “That government is best which governs least.” His colleague, Emerson said, “Mexico will poison us.” Conclude by explaining and evaluating these two statements. The immediate reason for the conflict was the annexation of Texas in 1845. Despite its defeat at San Jacinto in 1836, Mexico refused to recognize Texan independence and warned the United States that annexation would be tantamount to a declaration of war. In early 1845, Congress voted to annex Texas, Mexico cut diplomatic relations. Polk told his commanders to prepare for the possibility of war. He ordered American naval vesels in the Gulf of Mexico to position themselves outside Mexican ports. Peaceful settlements of the two coutnries’ differences still seemed possible. Polk had sent Slidell to compromise the damages of Texas and to buy out California and New mexico for 25 million dollars. The Mexican government refused the offer.
