The Washer Method If our strip perpendicular to the axis of revolution does not lie entirely inside the enclosed region, then we must use the washer method. This method is similar to the disk method in that we rotate the entire strip about the axis. But we must subtract that part of the differential that is outside the enclosed region. The formula for differential area becomes
