Patrick Moran Prof. Merson Oates and Errico: Ida Tarbell Takes on Standard Oil #1 This story portrays the difference and views of the money maker, and the money taker. It shows the ideas and actions of the people at the top, the wealthiest such as John D. Rockefeller, and the fights and struggles of the working class against these giants of monopoly. Were these men, John Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie, national heroes or corrupt villains of their time period? At this time in our history, men were going into politics for the same reason they would start a business, in order to obtain their fortunes. It is a downfall of our government that the working class is still facing today. The rich fund the rich, in order to keep the rich on top. They wealthy help and support the people within their social sphere in order to stay on top. Big businesses, like standard oil of the past and Nike of today, fund and sponsor the rich or the politicians so that they prosper in return. The politics during the time of standard oil showed no regard for the well being or advancement of the “grass root” of American; the grass root being the working class, such as workers, farmers, consumers, and small or aspiring business owners. There was some effort made by the working class to fight back against these giants. The American farmers organized alliances to protect themselves against the industrialists who ran the country. Their actions as well as others led to more political organizations such as the people’s party, and further the Populist Party in 1892. Other actions taken were by journalists whose goal was to let the American public community
