Chapter 8: We take nothing by Conquest, Thank God Main Points: Zinn was trying to explain that the war was caused by Manifest Destiny, idea based of American superiority. It is argues that the elites are the only ones benefited from war while the middle class wanted to avoid war and felt that it was a war of aggression. President Polk pushed to expand by taking part of Mexico, which started the Mexican American War. The Whig party wanted to expand but was against the war. Many people though that the Americans provoked the Mexicans. This gave the Mexicans a reason to fight over land. Newspapers of this time period misrepresented the war, companies such as American Peace Society printed sermons and petitions against war Quote “But he would not try to end the war by stopping funds for men and supplies.” Abraham Lincoln had not attempted to end war after his election in 1846. This is additional proof to claim that the Americans provoked the war and that only the elites were in favor of war.
