Healthcare system of a country is one aspect that modernizes the entire nation. The living conditions in a country can often be judged from the health of its citizens. Canada is considered to be one of the posh countries when it comes to the health of the population (Burt, 2009). However, it is almost impossible to have a perfect healthcare system since it is a very complex system. Quality of healthcare depends on many factors such as access to primary care, funding, timeliness, equity, efficiency, care continuity/coordination, etc. Furthermore, it is also dependant on individual factors such as sickness level of a patient, social and economic standards, affordability etc. Therefore, it is difficult to construct a complex system in regards to all these factors. In order to resolve the complex issues, the elementary concerns must also be considered. In regards to this, primary care is the basic concern of the Canadian healthcare system. Primary health care is the foundation of Canada’s health care system (Burt, 2009). It provides a critical entry point of contact to the health care system and serves as the beginning to continuity of care across the system. According to Health Council of Canada (2011), family doctors function as a regular source of primary care for the prevention and management of adverse health outcomes. It can be concluded that lack of primary care can have adverse effects on the health of the population i.e. the people without family doctors are often more prone to diseases as the early symptoms are ignored which further leads to chronic diseases. Homeless people are the major victims of lack of primary care in Canada (Burt, 2009). Homeless people often struggle to access primary care due to insecurities caused by low social and economic class, lack of documentation and lack of knowledge.

Relatively little research has described access to primary health care among homeless populations in countries such as Canada that have universal health insurance. In Canada, high economic standards are directly linked to good health (Raven, 2008). People that fall under low- income bracket are often high users of healthcare due to their poor living conditions. This directly includes homeless people as they have low or no means of income. According to a research by university of Ottawa, most of the homeless people have very poor hygiene due to their harsh living conditions (Raven, 2008). Poor hygiene not only plays a role in health but also plays a vital role in self-confidence. Homeless people do not feel the confidence to go to doctors and interact with them. They feel pressurised when they have to face the highly educated and high standard doctors. Their insecurities restrict them from attending the doctors’ clinic for primary care. Next, homeless people often feel that they are being discriminated by the doctors.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
