Billy Mills English 101 8:00 Tuesdays and Thursdays Professor Shuping November 13, 2007 A Raisin in the Sun Character Analysis of Mama In the play A Raisin in the Sun, an African American family, living in Chicago, has an opportunity to have their dreams come true with the arrival of an insurance check after the death of Walter, Sr. Ever since Lena Younger moved into the small apartment with Walter, Sr., she has dreamed of moving into her own home. Although she’s still living in the same apartment, her dream of moving into a new home could come true with the insurance check. Mama Younger, being the head of the household, can be described as an unselfish, loving, strong-willed woman. Mama’s best characteristic is her unselfish behavior. She is always doing what is best or all she can for her family. Most of the reason for wanting a new home is so her family can live a better, more comfortable life. The first thing Mama does in the play is fix Travis’ bed for him after he leaves for school. Mama asks Ruth why Travis isn’t good at making up his bed and Ruth replies,”He don’t try at all ‘cause he knows you going to come along behind him and fix everything.” (pg. 40) When Ruth starts ironing the family’s clothes; Mama’s unselfishness tells Ruth to let her do it. “You aiming to iron all them things? Leave some for me.” (pg. 40) Mama’s unselfish behavior is best seen when it comes time to decide what to do with the rest of the insurance check she is receiving for the death of her husband, Walter, Sr. Mama says to Walter, Jr.,”I want you to take this money and take three thousand dollars and put it in a savings
