Nikolaev (sometimes also written as Nikolayev ) is an impact crater located on the far
side of the Moon , so it is not visible from Earth . It lies north of the Mare Moscoviense
and south of the larger crater Von Neumann . It was named in memory of Soviet
cosmonaut Andrian Nikolayev . 1

The circular edge of this element is not covered by significant impacts, but has been
slightly eroded. It has an irregular brush and a wide interior wall. A terrace occupies
much of the wide inner edge where the material has broken off, especially on the
northeast side. The interior soil is rugged in some places, particularly in the eastern
half, and is marked by several small impacts in the southern half. It has a small central
elevation near the midpoint.
