Nikolaev(sometimes also written asNikolayev) is animpact craterlocated on thefarsideof theMoon, so it is not visible fromEarth. It lies north of theMare Moscovienseand south of the larger craterVon Neumann. It was named in memory of SovietcosmonautAndrian Nikolayev.1Oblique image from theLunar Orbiter5missionThe circular edge of this element is not covered by significant impacts, but has beenslightly eroded. It has an irregular brush and a wide interior wall. A terrace occupiesmuch of the wide inner edge where the material has broken off, especially on thenortheast side. The interior soil is rugged in some places, particularly in the easternhalf, and is marked by several small impacts in the southern half. It has a small centralelevation near the midpoint.
