ORIENTALISM / HEART OF DARKNESS 2 Knowledge and power have the ability to directly influence the behavior of others because of the awareness of familiarity gained by their own experiences. Knowledge is power and power is knowledge. However knowledge allows power to gain dominance, which then transcends to denial of self-rule to all who don’t have knowledge (Said, 2007). Orientalism refers to a group from the “west “that obtained authority over the “east” by using knowledge to gain power (Said, 2007).
