Test Four After dinosaurs were driven to extinction after an asteroid impact, mammals were able to take over new areas (niches). Many new lineages evolved as a result of adaptive radiation. *Humans are just another species of organism. *We evolved from common ancestors in a similar manner and are continuing to do so. Phylum Chordata Verbata Class Mammalis, order primates *Order primates - 1. Prosimians – oldest primates, like tarsier, lemurs. - More active during night bcs of their big eyes -2. Anthropoids – monkeys, apes, and humans - Larger brains relative to body size - Rely more on eyesight and less on smell * Three Groups: 1. Monkeys – have tails 2. Apes – no tail 3. Humans *Evolution of the Order Primate A. Characteristics -Grasping hands and feet -Limbs, shoulders, and hip joints -Nails instead of claws -Sensitive Fingers -Binocular vision B. Two Common Misconceptions: 1. Humans evolved from modern apes or monkeys. *Humans DID NOT evolve from apes or chimps. *Apes and hominids diverged from a common ancestor about 7 m.y.a. *Hominid – human and human like species, both past and present. 2.
